Elizabeth Freeland
School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Elizabeth is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an internationally recognized institution for undergraduate and graduate study of art and design. She will work at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory pursuing research in the field of theoretical elementary particle physics, in particular in the sub-discipline of lattice gauge theory.

Elizabeth earned her Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the Johns Hopkins University in 1996. She was the recipient of an AAUW American Fellowship in 2005. Her career break began when she followed her husband first to Brookhaven National Lab, then to Argonne National Lab. Difficulties with two pregnancies and the health problems of one child complicated her return to physics. While teaching part-time, she has re-trained herself in a new field and now is part of the Fermilab Lattice Collaboration. The Blewett Scholarship will allow her to devote herself full-time to research.
