Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

No. Informal arrangements can be made for short absences. A TA/RA should notify his/her supervisor in advance of an absence and, when possible, assist in obtaining a replacement or rearrangement of the duties. Excessive absences, regardless of the reason, are cause for termination before the end of the appointment period.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Single coverage is provided in the stipend for the student only. Additional coverage for spouse and family may be purchased as an out-of-pocket expense to the student purchased at the ASU Student Health Center.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We are a relatively young, diverse, and vigorous department that welcomes all academically-strong and enthusiastic students to join us in extending the frontiers of science. Both female and minority students are well represented in our graduate and undergraduate student body, and all fully participate in the research, teaching, and service missions of our department without bias.
