Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

There is no universal family leave policy for graduate students. Each situation is reviewed on a case by case basis.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

Family health insurance is available, but is not included in the stipend. The cost to the student is about $1000 per semester for family coverage.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

We have been striving to increase our female/male student ratio at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This ratio has fluctuated in recent years between about 25-40%. To provide additional support for our famale students, we have three female part-time faculty members involved in both teaching and research. We have also started a Women in Physics group that meets approximately monthly during the academic year to discuss topics and issues of interest to the group. The department has provided financial support for the group to help make these meetings attractive for our female students.
